Ceramic damask-kumanets “Baranets” | Vinogradivsky plant / Opishnya, URSR, 1960–70s Description
Collectible ceramic damask (kumanets) “Baranets” is an important symbol of Ukrainian artistic majolica of the Mid-Century Modern era. The vessel is made by hand from terracotta clay and coated with a luxurious high-gloss glaze. This is a refined interpretation of the traditional zoomorphic Ukrainian utensils that serve for serving wine, liqueurs or local drinks. At the bottom of the case there is a rare author’s stamp “AW”, making this copy a special find for collectors.

Characteristics and artistic details
•Unique texture: The body of the kumanets is decorated with a uniquely textured “coat” that masterfully has curls of sheep’s wool. The leather patch is applied by hand.
•Construction: The damask has a folding architectonics: a figured spout, two massive sculptural handles that go into a twisted horn, a thinned round neck and an authentic ceramic cork stopper on the neck.
•Glaze and color: Deep caramel-brown and burgundy colored decor. Watering with a noble vintage craquelure effectively enhances the relief, creating a group of shadows and highlights with different lightening.
